Volkswagen has released further images of the 2008 Touareg R50 which was unveiled at the 2007 Sydney Motor Show on Oct. 11. The R50 is VW’s third “R” model after the Golf R32 and Passat R36. and it’s equipped with supped up version of VW’s 5.0-liter V10 turbodiesel unit that delivers an output of 350 Hp allowing it to sprint from standstill to 100 km/h – 62 mph in 6,7 sec. Following last week’s teaser preview, VW let loose all the details concerning the third member of its sporty “R” family. Making its world premier at the Sydney Show (Oct.11), the R50 is based on the Touareg V10 TDi model. Adjustments to the V10 diesel unit’s turbo charger and ECU increased overall output to 350 Hp (+37 Hp) and maximum torque to a tremendous 850 Nm or 626.9-lb/ft (+100 Nm or 73.7-lb/ft). The R50 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h(62 mph) in 6.7 sec (Touareg V10 TDi: 7.4 sec) while it has a top speed of 235 km/h – 146 mph. Extra power aside, the R50 comes equipped with a sport package that includes among other things, redesigned bumpers, side skirts, 21-inch alloys and a modified radiator grille, sport seats and metallic decor in the interior. Impressive power: The V10 TDI of the Touareg R50 develops 350 PS of power and 850 Newton-meter of torque

The engine characteristic of the Touareg R50 is marked by a torque level nearly unattainable by the competition: The V10 TDI of the Touareg R50 develops its enormous power of 850 Newton-meter at a low 2,000 rpm. The turbo diesel was derived from the well-known ten cylinder with 230 kW / 313 PS. Adjustments to its turbo charging and modified engine management enabled a 28 kW / 37 PS increase in power and a considerable 100 Newton-meter increase in maximum torque. Under these new parameters, the SUV accelerates to 100 km/h in just 6.7 seconds (production car: 7.4 seconds); its top speed is 235 km/h. In relation to engine power and vehicle size, the fuel consumption of the production ten-cylinder diesel equipped with a particulate filter is a moderate 9.6 liters per 100 km (highway) and 12.6 liters per 100 km (overall). Despite big gains in power and torque, its DIN fuel consumption values have remained constant compared to the Touareg V10 TDI.
In keeping with the performance potential of the R50, Volkswagen Individual designed new exterior and interior features according to the R philosophy. From the outside, the new Touareg R50 is easy to recognize with its 21-inch Omanyt type alloy wheels and size 295 tires, blue painted brake calipers, discrete wheel well flares, side skirts and distinctive bumpers (Sport Design Package), as well as a modified radiator grille (in a matte finish chrome).
Offered exclusively on the Touareg R50 is the car color "Biscay blue". Blue hues of this type have been typical of the high-powered R models since the first Golf R32 was introduced in the year 2002. Offered as optional car colors on the Touareg R50 are "Campanella white", "Reflex silver", "Black Magic" and "Atacam gray".
The car’s extensive features also include an air suspension sport chassis: The so-called "Driving dynamics package with adaptive roll compensation" and chassis lowered by twenty millimeter supplements the "Sport" mode of the manually or automatically controlled air suspension by achieving a stiffer spring rate.
On the inside, the SUV’s features include a sport seating system in anthracite-colored nappa leather with R50 logo integrated in the headrests. The logo was also integrated in the stainless steel tread plates. Also in keeping with the sporty character of the Touareg is the light-colored "engine spin" decor of the interior – a metallic structure similar to that previously used on race cars – as well as metal worked caps for the accelerator and brake pedals. A R50 logo also decorates the gearshift lever of the six-speed automatic transmission (Tiptronic). Standard features the Touareg R50 also include a winter package (including seat heating for the rear seats), the Premium Memory Package (including electrically adjustable seats, steering column and seatbelt height), net partition behind the rear seats and a ski sack.
VW will further broaden its product line of “R” models which consist of the Golf R32 and Passat R36 with the presentation of the Touareg R50 at the Sydney International Auto Show on October 11, 2007. The German carmaker has yet to announce detailed specifications, but they did reveal that R50 will feature a revised version of the Touareg V10 TDi’s 5.0-liter V10 diesel engine that delivers in stock form, 313 Hp and a monstrous 750 Nm or 553.2-lbs/ft of maximum torque. Just to get an idea, the Touareg V10 TDi boasts a top speed of 231 km/h – 143 mph while it accelerates from standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 7,4 sec. Developed by a team of specialists at Volkswagen Individual GmbH, the Touareg R50 is one of the most powerful SUVs in the world.
While Volkswagen has yet to announce detailed specifications, it promises the R50 boasts "generous" increases on the 230kW of power and 750Nm of torque produced by the current V10 TDi model on which it is based. Bigger wheels and tyres and tweaked suspension complete the high-performance package.

German tuner Cobra has released a new line of accessories for the recently updated 2008 VW Touareg. Cobra’s most prominent accessory is of course the stainless-steel front bull bar which attempts to give a “Texas Ranger” look to the luxury German SUV. The exterior of the Touareg can be further refined –if that’s what you dig we mean, with a stainless-steel grille for the aperture in the front bumper, chrome-design mirror housings and two different styled rocker panels. Finally Cobra also offers custom-tailored light-alloy wheels with diameters of 20 and 22 inches for all versions of the VW Touareg. Following the release of the updated 2008 Touareg back in January this year, German based, tuner Abt presented their revised versions of VW’s luxury SUV. The Abt Touareg stands out optically thanks to the full bodykit consisting of a front spoiler lip, side skirts, fender extensions, a rear wing, rear skirts and the 4-pipe exhaust system. Abt also equips the Touareg with 19, 20 or 22-inch alloys. Under the skin, Abt’s Touareg receives a revised suspension and brake system. For the moment, Abt offers three diesel and one petrol version, all of which come with a power increase: 2.5 TDI with 195hp (+21hp), 3.0 TDI with 270hp (+45hp), 5.0 V10 TDI with 360hp (+47hp) and finally the petrol 4.2 V8 with an output of 500hp (+150hp). -Continued below

2002, the Touareg marked Volkswagen’s powerful way into the field of SUVs. “Even for Abt, the car was absolutely new territory,“ explains Hans-Jürgen Abt. Back then, the managing director of Abt Sportsline did in fact have doubts about the market opportunities of the heavy weight: “But the SUV has become a great success, and meanwhile Touareg and Audi Q7 are among our success stories.”

Press Release: At the front, the new Touareg features a new grille, bonnet, front wings and bumper, plus new headlights and mirrors. The rear lights, spoiler, bumper and exhaust pipes have also been modified to freshen the 4x4's appearance.
The new Touareg will feature new and revised technology, including ABSPlus and additional ESP (Electronic Stabilisation Programme) features. ABSPlus has been developed and patented by Volkswagen and is a world first. The system shortens the braking distance by up to 20% on loose driving surfaces. New features have been added to the ESP, these include Active Rollover Protection (ARP), rain brake support, fading brake support and understeer control logic, which improves the turning behaviour in the event of understeer.
